Back up first
Copy documents, photos, password-vault recovery information, and any business records you must retain. Open a few files from the backup before erasing the original device.
Sign out and remove locks
Sign out of cloud accounts and device-finding services. Remove SIM and memory cards. Activation locks can make an otherwise useful phone, tablet, or computer unusable to the next owner.
Use the maker’s erase process
Follow the current instructions from the device manufacturer. A reset menu is not identical across phones, computers, printers, smart televisions, and storage drives. For business equipment, follow your organization’s data-destruction policy.
Sort accessories
Bundle power supplies, keyboards, cables, and adapters with the matching equipment. Label the bundle without adding account names, passwords, or other sensitive information.
